About

The Sunset Foundation - best known for our annual Sunset Walk - would like to take this opportunity to THANK YOU for 20 years of support! The Walk, which started with a few women who met on the Bayside in Breezy Point to support those battling cancer, has grown into one of the largest Breezy Point events.  It represents the best of our community, who support one another in times of need.

Twenty years ago, Breezy Point resident Annie Tully received unwavering support from her neighbors during her battle with cancer. She decided others fighting against the enemy we know as “cancer” should feel cared for in the same encouraging way she had been. And The Sunset Walk was born! The goal of “The Walk” was to raise funds and give love to others in similar situations.

Originally supporting women with cancer, The Sunset Walk would gather friends in August to walk the beautiful bay at sunset. After eight years, Annie and her friend Rita Gibson, also a cancer fighter, enlisted Joanie Crowley to take over the walk. A young mother of three, Joanie herself had also been diagnosed with cancer. However, despite her diagnosis, she gratefully accepted the challenge. Under her guidance, the Sunset Walk progressed into The Sunset Foundation, a community-based, nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

Today, The Sunset Foundation has evolved and expanded to assist - financially and emotionally - men, women and children receiving treatment for any cancer. It has magnified its impact by supporting residents in the Breezy Point, Rockaway and Broad Channel communities. All donations and funds raised go directly into the hands of local neighbors. In addition to continuing the legacy of The Sunset Walk, the Foundation provides funding to offset the uninsured costs of treatment and offers a newly established support group.

As The Sunset Foundation grows, so does its necessity.  The Sunset Foundation supports over 50 newly diagnosed neighbors each year. Unfortunately, most of us are affected by cancer either directly or indirectly.  Diagnosis is devastating, and while treatments have advanced, the road can be a long one.  While monetary support is important, providing emotional support to our neighbors when they receive their diagnosis is paramount.  A dedicated community is a blessing to patients and families.  We can transform what can be a lonely place to a place filled with love and actions that speak louder than words.
